Region 1 VPPPA offers three scholarships each year.  The scholarships are named after individuals who were very instrumental in the early success of Region 1 VPPPA.

ERIC BARTSCH MEMORIAL SAFETY & HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP 

Awarded to a full-time student majoring in Occupational Safety or Occupational Health field.

CASWELL PLANTE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to a full-time student that has a minimum grade point average of 3.0 out of 4.0 at time of application.

JOE GERVAIS MEMORIAL COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP 

Awarded to a full-time student with an outstanding record of community service

Winner: Emma Schweizer

VPP Company:  Raytheon

Field of Study: Nursing

What captured the attention of the scholarship committee was the Letter of Recommendation from Suzanne Schryver detailing Emma’s work as a peer tutor.  Emma’s natural instincts to help people imbue her approach to teaching, resulting in a positive experience for the students.  This trait will serve her well in her career as a nurse.  In the words of Ms. Schryver, “There is no doubt in my mind that when she graduates from Rivier, Emma will be an exceptional nurse”.

Winner: Piper Lieto

VPPPA Company:  Raytheon

Field of Study: Nursing

Piper maintains a 4.0 GPA over 15 credit hours at the University of Massachusetts.  Her accomplishments include making the Dean’s List in the Spring 2020 and Fall 2021 sessions.

JOE GERVAIS MEMORIAL COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP 

Winner: Shannon Horgan

VPPPA Company:  Raytheon

Field of Study: Biomedical Engineering

What captured the attention of the scholarship committee was Shannon’s record of volunteerism while maintaining a 3.94 GPA and a position on the Dean’s List at the University of Massachusetts.

In her Letter of Recommendation, Kelly Guy plainly and directly addressed Shannon’s volunteerism; “Shannon has become one of our go-to students for volunteer opportunities”.  “Shannon Horgan is an exceptional student, leader, and person. I cannot recommend her enough”.
